Kg Esok 4×4 Weekend Camping Trip

12-13 March 2011, Sat-Sun

Finally! Back again after over a year and how things have changed. The weather turned kind as the skies opened up Friday night after a week of incessant rain. Saturday morning was cool and crisp, giving way to a easy drive out of Klang valley to our “Best in the World” nasi lemak warung before going 45minutes into the depths of Kg Esok.

And yes, areas closed, natural spots developed and locked, and so we went back and forth and ended up at Ponak private campground which was a foot of a hill surrounded by a river. Previously beautifully landscaped but only for the recent rains of the Johor floods (Chinese New Year) that saw heaps of debris dumped on the riverbanks and water almost drowning the campsite! Yep, Kg Esok was not spared and the tourist spots like Lata Kijang and Gunung Besar Hantu are out of bounds by order of the district council- indefinitely.

Still the campsite was a relative luxury – generator for a handful of lightbulbs strung across the grounds, half completed concrete toilets (having to bucket water into the bowls sure beats needing to dig one!)….and having the river surrounds for icy cool baths, river walks, night fishing, and some security somewhat. RM10 per person!

And so…our Top Ten would include:
1. Icy cool river for bath, feet soak, white water “body rafting”
2. Chef Azman’s menu for the entire weekend
3. Nightime river trekking cum fishing
4. Open fire full course BBQ for supper
5. Nocturnal senses of the jungle past midnight
6. Smell of the morning and breakfast!
7. Lazying Sunday morning to all’s content!
8. …
9…..
10. 1hr45mins and we’ll be back home…. if we wanted to

AND…. we’ll be back for:
8. River Canyon trek wadding an hour or so up the river.
9. Fishing season – picking off kelah swimming upstream for spawning.
